Paper choices are endless! There are pts and lbs, card stocks and cover stocks and then the decision to choose matte or gloss! No matter what you are printing: business cards, postcards, color brochures, or letterhead, the paper you choose to print them on is imperative to getting the desired look of the finished product. Sometimes when you are ordering online and cannot physically inspect a sample, the selection process can be confusing and downright overwhelming!
With that in mind, let us help you sort out the difference between some of the paper substrates you’ll want to select for your upcoming printing projects.
First, let’s look at the difference between 14 pt. card stock and 100 lb book weight paper. 14 pt. card stock is a thick sturdy paper and is used when you don’t want your finished product to droop. You wouldn’t want to use book weight for your business cards due to its extreme flexibility! The 14 pt. refers to a measurement of thickness equaling to .014 inches thick. It is noticeably thicker than 10 pt. card stock and only slightly thicker than 12 pt. Basically, all that you need to remember is this: the higher the pt. number, the thicker the paper is. 14 pt. card stock is also known as cover stock. Card stock or cover stock is perfect for printing business cards, postcards, door hangers, presentation folders or anything that needs to be sturdy. Because it is thicker, 14 pt. paper is perceived as being of higher quality. Therefore, it is popular for printing marketing pieces and business cards.
Book weight paper is the same text weight paper. 100 lb, paper, also written as 100#, is measured in weight as opposed to thickness. The “100 lb” refers to the weight of 500 printer sheets of this paper and is considered a medium “text weight.” Book weight is more flexible than the card stock and does not stand up well on its own. It is thinner than card stock, which makes it ideal for printing projects that need to be folded, stacked or transported like flyers, booklets, or brochures.
Next, there is coated and uncoated paper. Coated papers offer superior smoothness thus producing nice contrast and print definition. Uncoated papers offer a range of textures and shades. Glossy vs. Matte: Glossy papers convey quality and sophistication, and they make photos “pop,” but their shine also can make text difficult to read. Matte and dull papers project an “environmentally friendly” image, and their soft white appearance makes for good text legibility.
